In the bottle with the bluish-green label, the 2019 Chianti Rufina Riserva Vigneto Erchi shows great balance and displays the quality found across these enjoyable wines from Selvapiana. The bouquet interjects with dark cherry, iris, earth and blood orange. The wine is firm and quite concentrated in terms of mouthfeel; however, it feels bright and lifted all the while.
The 2020 Ghiaie della Furba opens with a mentholated freshness, blending minty herbs, spiced orange peels and red currants. It envelops the palate in textures of pure silk, quickly gaining grip with a core of tart red berries and sour citrus as edgy tannins pinch at the cheeks. This finishes with admirable length, structure and concentration, leaving a pleasantly bitter tinge to linger as hints of cedar and a savory herbal thrust slowly fade. The 2020 needs time, and a lot of it.
Kapriol Produced from juniper berries and aromatic herbs such as cardamom, mint and bay leaves. Delicate straw/yellow; aromas of chamomile, lemon zest and pekoe tea. Full bodied with impressive richness on the palate and a dry, herbal finish that is powerful. Enjoy this over the next 5-7 years. 38% alcohol.
EDITOR'S CHOICE. Timorasso is one of the most distinctive white grapes in the Italian canon, and Vietti has struck gold. Aromas of fresh and baked yellow peaches and spiced pears mix with hints of petrol, magnolia and dried mango. Wild honey, beeswax and a limestone minerality give volume, complexity and depth to this wine, finishing with fresh and lifted acidity. Drink now–2035.
A racy red, with high-pitched aromas of tart cherry and rose hip signaling the bracing acidity. Intense, picking up wild herbs, mineral, leather and a smoky note on the palate. Shows excellent balance and length. Best from 2025 through 2042.
Though underscored by vibrant acidity, this distinctly sweet white displays toffee, butterscotch, walnut, orange zest and multi-grain toast aromas and flavors. Concentrated, this persists on the finish, with dried fruit, fig and date notes. Shows terrific length. Trebbiano and San Colombano. Drink now through 2040.
Best Buy. Concentrated aromas of black plum, fig, blackberry, white pepper, allspice and tea leaf roll out of the glass. Gamy on the palate with a lush and generous offering of black cherry jam that is balanced by floral and savory elements bringing the wine to its earthy finish.
